Alcohol in Household Products . Alcohol is more pervasive in the homes of North Americans than one would expect, and younger children are at risk of alcohol ingestions, too. Alcohol is present in a number of household items in addition to popular alcoholic beverages and many of these items, such as mouthwash and cosmetics, are readily accessible to children. Household products that contain alcohol can be categorized into medicinal, cosmetic, personal hygiene or cleaning products. Medicinal products include items such as over- the- counter cold medications and non- prescription items. Cosmetics include perfumes, colognes, make- up and hairstyling items. Personal- hygiene products include deodorants, shampoos, face and body washes, shaving- related items, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and hand sanitizers. Finally, cleaning products encompass most household cleaners such as deodorizers, surface polishes, hand and dish liquids, detergents and softeners. Alcohol is the second- most common active principal ingredient in childhood poisoning seen in emergency departments. Serious adverse events that result from alcohol poisoning include decreased blood sugar levels, seizures and death. It should be noted that many children may have been safely observed at home after ingesting a small quantity of a substance and the actual incidence of ingestion of household substances containing ethanol may be higher. What is Antabuse, and how does it work (mechanism of action)? Disulfiram is an oral drug used for treating alcoholism. Alcohol is converted in the body into. Cosmetic Products. Perfumes and colognes have 5. Fortunately, the frequency of significant poisonings is low and may be due to the poor palatability of these agents. As ingestion of very small amount of these products with high alcohol concentrations by infants and toddlers can lead to significant poisoning and associated drop in blood sugar, however, all children that ingest these products should be checked by a health care professional. Personal Hygiene Products. Hygiene products such as toothpaste and mouthwashes are readily accessible items to children, are especially attractive to children due to their typical usage in oral care, or are infused with fragrances and flavors associated with foods (such as vanilla or fruit.) Of particular concern is mouthwash. Mouthwashes contain a significant amount of ethanol, approximately 2. Teenagers intentionally ingest mouthwash solely for its alcohol content- to get drunk. You. Tube videos and media reports of teenagers getting drunk on mouthwash highlight the prevalence of this problem. Although some cleaning products contain alcohol, the serious effects of ingesting a cleaning product is usually due to other corrosive substances such as acids or alkali. Disinfectants are considered low risk for severe adverse effects when ingested in small quantities, but in larger amounts can cause corrosive effects, acidosis, depressed level of consciousness, aspiration pneumonia, or liver and kidney damage due to other potentially toxic ingredients rather than alcohol alone. Alcohol- based hand sanitizers provide a significant risk of intoxication due to their 6. Absorption of alcohol through the skin, regardless of frequency of use, is considered unlikely. Some hand sanitizers have a pleasant citrus odor, which increases the likelihood of accidental ingestion. Ingestions of sanitizers have been reported to be associated with significant alcohol poisoning, drop in blood sugar and coma. Discussion. Many household items that are easily accessible to young children contain significant amounts of alcohol in them (please see Household Products Database http: //hpd. Preventing ingestion of common household products containing alcohol is the most effective strategy to reduce childhood poisonings due to household products. The 1. 99. 5 Consumer Product Safety Commission legislation mandated that mouthwashes with greater than 3gms ethanol content required childproof closures. Current mouthwash formulas typically have less ethanol content, ranging typically from 5 to 2. United States. Labels of hand sanitizers currently state that the product should be kept out of reach of children, but do not mention the risks of ingestion. Labels should also clearly highlight whether the product contains a significant quantity of alcohol to provide parents and health care providers key information for management strategies. Parents should pay attention to proper storage of alcohol- containing products to avoid accidental ingestions. The recommended management for alcohol ingestion, in both pure and household product compositions, is largely supportive with close monitoring. Ingestion of the equivalent of 1. As such, children who have ingested significant amounts of products containing ethanol or those who show any change in behavior or other signs and symptoms should be promptly taken to a health care facility. This also applies to the toddler who drank some of the parent’s alcoholic drink when it was left unattended. Letting a child sleep off a significant ingestion is not a good idea as unrecognized drops in blood sugar can have catastrophic consequences. You may also be interested in. Disulfiram (Antabuse) Side Effects, Dosage & Reaction to Alcohol. What is Antabuse, and how does it work (mechanism of action)? Disulfiram is an oral drug used for treating alcoholism. Alcohol is converted in the body into acetaldehyde by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase. Another enzyme called acetaldehyde dehydrogenase then converts acetaldehyde into acetic acid. By The Editors of Prevention February 25, 2014. Processed Pet Food — Biologically Inappropriate for Your Pet. By Dr. Becker. Not long ago I ran across a headline in a pet food industry journal that gave me a chuckle. Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), many board- certified veterinary nutritionists, and a variety of other pet food industry organizations and individual special interest groups to scare people away from raw pet diets aren't having the intended effect. After all, most humans don't eat raw meat diets. I think the explanation is simply that a growing number of pet parents are realizing the benefit of species- appropriate food for their pets, recognizing that dogs and cats are not human and do best when fed unprocessed, meat- based diets with nutrient profiles that closely match the diets of wild dogs and cats (and go far beyond AAFCO nutrient standards). It shouldn't be a surprise that our pets thrive on a well- constructed, fresh ancestral diet. However, animals have hunted prey or, in the case of dogs, scavenged, for millions of years. And although recent research suggests domesticated carnivores were able to adapt to some degree to starch in the diet as humans became planters and farmers of grains, this does not mean dogs and cats have evolved into vegetarians. Over the last hundred years, major pet food companies have produced most of their products using a base of corn (which is now genetically modified), wheat, rice, or potato (with a glycemic index that is off the charts). These ingredients are blended with rendered, poor quality proteins and a synthetic vitamin/mineral mix. They are extruded, then processed again at very high temperatures. However, our carnivorous pets have not evolved to be able to process these substantially altered, foreign foods. The good news is dogs and cats are adaptable and resilient. But unfortunately, this means they are able to withstand significant nutritional abuse; they can be fed a nutrient deficient, biologically incorrect diet without immediately dying. Richard Patton states, . Instead, we've created dozens of generations of nutritionally weakened animals that suffer from degenerative diseases linked to longstanding nutritional deficiencies. The truth is our pet population provides a place for recycling waste from the human food industry. Grains that fail inspection, human food past its expiration date, uninspected pieces and parts of waste from the seafood industry, leftover restaurant grease, deceased livestock, and even roadkill is collected and disposed of through rendering - a process that converts human food industry waste into raw materials for the pet food industry. They add bulk vitamin and mineral supplements (most from China), and then they extrude the mix at high temperatures (the process that makes kibble, or dry food), creating all sorts of toxic reactions including advanced glycation end products and cancer causing heterocyclic amines. Healthy nutrition is an important part of disease prevention. Learn how to change your diet and make healthier choices. Title: NUTRITION & DIET THERAPY Author: Les Jones Last modified by: Les Jones Created Date: 1/22/2005 5:10:00 PM Document presentation format: On-screen Show. They call these crunchy little pellets and canned goo . We are beginning to see words like . But exactly what is ? No factory farmed, nutrient deficient meats? No high- arsenic rice? No synthetic preservatives or vitamins? The problem is there isn't a set . We see more . But the substitutes have significant nutritional implications as well. Manufacturers are hearing the rumblings of educated pet owners and are updating their marketing to try to regain lost customers by changing their ingredients to regain market share. But the issues remain the same: using poor quality ingredients, relying on synthetic nutrients (instead of nutrient dense foods), and utilizing extensive processing techniques to extend shelf life means most pet food is dead food. Feeding a lifetime of processed foods makes it impossible for your pet's body to be as vibrantly healthy as it should be. Vegetables and fruits provide antioxidants and fiber to animals that no longer hunt whole prey. Natural sources of trace minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids must be added, since the soils in which foods are grown are depleted of many of the nutrients pets need. Also, food storage, whether it's in a freezer or a pantry, decreases critical essential fatty acid levels in foods. Pets need unadulterated, fresh, whole foods that are moisture dense. They don't need grains, fillers, artificial preservatives, colors, additives, chemicals, byproducts, or processed foods. Although animals can eat some processed foods, they aren't designed to consume a lifetime of dry or canned diets. Nutritional goals for my veterinary patients and my own pets include a diet that is as species- appropriate as possible (low in carbohydrates, high moisture content, and unprocessed), and a variety of fresh, whole foods that are nutritionally complete and optimal for the species. For many people, this means feeding a dry food diet, but there are still excellent ways you can move towards feeding more fresh foods without breaking the bank. I have many clients who have creatively made fresh food a reality for their pets, even on a tight budget, the cheapest option being home prepared meals (commercial fresh food diets are expensive). Shopping sales, utilizing local food co- ops and buying in bulk can often bring the cost of an excellent quality homemade diet to less than the cost of many super premium dry foods on the market today. Make sure to follow a balanced recipe if you do home- prep; homemade nutrient deficient diets aren't the goal. Yes, homemade diets take time and effort, but the payoff is substantially healthier pets with fewer vet bills. Your pet needs quality protein, fats, and a small amount of vegetables and fruits. Avoid feeding them with processed pet food; instead, go for a fresh food diet. Magnetic Resonance Elastography: Venkatesh SK, Yin M, Ehman RL. Deep brain stimulation (or DBS) is a variation of an old surgery that may be used to treat tremors in people with conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, and essential tremor. In the 1. 96. 0s, surgery was used to destroy a small area deep in the brain called the thalamus (thalamotomy) or another part of the brain called the globus pallidus (pallidotomy). These surgeries are still done today, although less frequently because of the availability of deep brain stimulation. These surgeries carry significant risks: both thalamotomy and pallidotomy require purposeful destruction of the brain. If the surgeon is off by even a fraction of an inch, the surgery may not be effective and severe complications such as paralysis, loss of vision, or loss of speech can result. Deep brain stimulation is a way to inactivate parts of the brain without purposefully destroying the brain. Therefore, the risks are much lower. In deep brain stimulation, the tip of an electrode is placed in the thalamus (for tremor and multiple sclerosis) or in the globus pallidus or subthalamic nucleus (for Parkinson's disease). The electrode for deep brain stimulation is left in the brain. It is connected by a wire to a pacemaker- like device that is implanted under the skin over the chest. The device generates electrical shocks. Abortion has two victims: the unborn child, and the mother who can never. What Are the Advantages of Deep Brain Stimulation? Deep brain stimulation offers many advantages. The electrical stimulation is adjustable, whereas surgical destruction is not. The electrode has four metal contacts that can be used in many different combinations. Even if one electrode contact is not in the exact location, it is likely that one of the others or some combination of the electrical contacts will be closer to the proper target. As the patient's response to surgery changes over time, the stimulation can be adjusted without requiring a repeat operation. Another significant advantage of deep brain stimulation relates to future treatments. Destructive surgery, such as thalamotomy or pallidotomy, may reduce the patient's potential to benefit from future therapies. With deep brain stimulation, the stimulator could be turned off if other therapies were to be tried. New research finds that a noninvasive electromagnetic brain stimulation technique assists obese people in losing weight, by altering their gut bacteria. Deep brain stimulation uses electrical impulses to stimulate a target area in the brain. The stimulation affects movement by altering the activity in that area of the. Deep brain stimulation decreases tics in young adults with severe Tourette syndrome Date: April 7, 2017 Source: NYU Langone Medical Center / New York University. Continued. How Does Deep Brain Stimulation Help Multiple Sclerosis? The main purpose of deep brain stimulation for people with multiple sclerosis is to control a severe tremor related to the disease. In the case of multiple sclerosis, other problems such as loss of vision, sensation, or strength are not helped by deep brain stimulation. Can Deep Brain Stimulation Cure Multiple Sclerosis? No. Electrical stimulation does not cure multiple sclerosis nor prevent the disease from getting worse; it helps to relieve the symptom of tremor related to MS. Is Deep Brain Stimulation Considered Experimental? Deep brain stimulation is not experimental. The FDA has approved DBS to treat Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. Dystonia is a type of movement disorder characterized by abnormal postures and twisting motions. The FDA has not specifically approved deep brain stimulation of the thalamus to treat multiple sclerosis. However, this does not mean that the treatment is experimental or that it would not be covered by insurance. There are many examples of treatments that are used every day but have not been approved by the FDA for a specific medical condition. Who Should Consider Deep Brain Stimulation? There are many important issues to be addressed when considering deep brain stimulation. These issues should be discussed with a movement disorders expert or a specially trained neurologist. Before considering surgery, you should try medication first. Surgery should not be undertaken if drugs are able to control your symptoms. However, surgery should be considered if you do not achieve satisfactory control through medications. If you are unsure if DBS is right for you, consult a movement disorders expert or a neurologist who has experience with movement disorders. Where Should Deep Brain Stimulation Be Performed? Deep brain stimulation should be performed in a center where there is a team of experts to care for you. This means neurologists and neurosurgeons who have extensive experience and specialized training in doing these types of surgeries. Always ask a physician how many of a specific procedure he has performed. Sources. SOURCES: The Cleveland Clinic. The Johns Hopkins Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center. For most healthy people, a high- protein diet generally isn't harmful, particularly when followed for a short time. Such diets may help with weight loss by making you feel fuller. However, the risks of using a high- protein diet with carbohydrate restriction for the long term are still being studied. Several health problems may result if a high- protein diet is followed for an extended time: Some high- protein diets restrict carbohydrate intake so much that they can result in nutritional deficiencies or insufficient fiber, which can cause problems such as bad breath, headache and constipation. Some high- protein diets include foods such as red meat and full- fat dairy products, which may increase your risk of heart disease. A high- protein diet may worsen kidney function in people with kidney disease because your body may have trouble eliminating all the waste products of protein metabolism. If you want to follow a high- protein diet, choose your protein wisely. Good choices include soy protein, beans, nuts, fish, skinless poultry, lean beef, pork and low- fat dairy products. Avoid processed meats. The quality of the carbohydrates (carbs) you eat is important too. Cut processed carbs from your diet, and choose carbs that are high in fiber and nutrient- dense, such as whole grains and vegetables and fruit. It's always a good idea to talk with your doctor before starting a weight- loss diet. And that's especially important in this case if you have kidney disease, diabetes or other chronic health condition.
